Canon EOS RP review

Canon seem to be gunning for those who want all the glitz and glamour of a full-frame mirrorless camera on a budget. We’re impressed that by making very clever compromises from the EOS R, this little rock star packs a hell of a punch with clever software tricks, an incredible user interface so that really anyone can pick it up and work out what to do. Where a camera of this spec might’ve intimidated a newbie, the minimal design, excellent touch screen, WiFi and Bluetooth compatibility, it’s no longer something reserved for camera boffins. For the accessibility and affordability, we're sold.

Compact and relatively light for full frame; Affordable; Brilliant Autofocus; Effective touchscreen;

Only crop 4k video; Battery life could be better; No sensor-based image stabilisation ;

Great full frame for casual photographer!

I was looking for an upgrade to my trusty 5D mkII and didn't want to reinvest in lenses. The EOS RP was the right fit for me and it was surprisingly affordable when paired with one of Canon's promotions (I had the bonus RF 35mm lens). The R was a bit too expensive given my 'casual' use-case. The EOS RP matches or beats the 5D mk II in every way. Given the 5DmkII was used by professionals/wedding photographers back in it's hey-day, you won't be lacking in 'capability' for good still photos. Awesome features I appreciate in the RP as an 'stills-only' upgrader: - Dual Pixel AF is amazing - no more focus hunting (or lack of focus lock) in low light. This thing can focus fast in barely lit rooms! (My biggest reason for upgrading - fear of missing shots of my newborn) - EVF is pretty handy -> What you see is what you get, so I'm not re-taking shots from my poor guesswork in scenes with subjects in front of bright backlighting. - Touch Screen makes navigating menus much nicer - als

Canon EOS RP Digital SLR Camera Body - Brand New review

While it's a shame that picture and sound quality haven't been upgraded, the iPhone 13 was great in these regards and the iPhone 14 is, too Excellent display Admirable headphone performance Solid build quality No upgrades to picture or sound Familiar design Notch is still present

Canon EOS RP Review

It was over 70 degrees in New Orleans by the time I ate breakfast. It would crest 80 before lunch. Having left Oregon's below-freezing temperatures (and a dusting of evanescent snow) the day before, it may as well have been 100 - not the type of weather in which I want to lug around a bunch of...

Very good price; Compact; lightweight; Excellent autofocus and metering; Good high ISO image quality; Fully articulating touchscreen

Some purposefully truncated features; Limited customization options; Video modes lack refinement

Alas, we aren't being treated to Canon's high end EOS R camera, but with the Canon EOS RP we're getting a pretty interesting candidate in the mix. The Canon EOS RP is being aggressively priced at $1,299 and has the same sensor at the heart of the Canon 6D Mk II.

With the full-frame digital camera market steadily expanding beyond the professional realm, camera manufacturers see an opportunity to showcase the benefits of having a full-frame body to pretty much everyone, from enthusiasts and bloggers/influencers to stay-at-home moms and dads.
